Audio.TST September 2008 Introducing the APx526 4 Channel analzyer

Created 02 Sep 2008

Notes from the Test Bench

By Bruce Hofer, Chairman & Co-Founder, Audio Precision

Hello addressee_placeholder

We're busy preparing for AES, so this will be a short Audio.TST.

When we introduced the two channel APx520 and 525 in May, many of you in automotive were impressed, but you immediately came back and said you needed four channels, not just two.

AP has always been very responsive to our customers’ requests, so I’m happy to declare that, true to form, we have provided what was asked for. The APx521 and APx526 are four channel versions of the APx520 and 525 respectively, with four inputs, two outputs and 192K digital I/O on the 526. The specs are the same as for the APx520/525: namely, very good.

The official introduction for these new models is Friday at AES. I hope you can stop by our booth at AES (Booth 825) to see the APx526 testing the audio performance and RDS of a 4 channel automotive head unit. Otherwise, please visit the ap.com website or contact your local Sales Partner to learn more.

I'd also like to welcome GenTek to the AP team of Sales Partners. GenTek will represent AP in the southeastern United States. The company is very experienced in test and measurement, and I'm sure their engineers will add significant value for AP's customers in the region.

Best Wishes,

Bruce

Audio Precision Pays Tribute to Dr. Angelo Farina for his work on log chirp

AP President Dave Schmoldt reports on a recent AP event in Parma, Italy where AP presented an APx585 to Dr. Angelo Farina of the University of Parma.

On September 18, 2008, Audio Precision had the distinct honor of paying tribute to Dr. Angelo Farina for his pioneering work in the development of the continuous sweep (log chirp) technique. We feel that it was only fitting to recognize Dr. Farina for his landmark work since the continuous sweep technique is one of the banner features of Audio Precision’s APx line of instruments.

Continuous sweep enables users to make very fast multichannel linear and non-linear measurements whose results are comparable to traditional sine-based techniques. Continuous sweep is a major step forward in audio measurement technology, and Audio Precision is proud to have incorporated Dr Farina's technique into our instruments.

Audio Link, AP’s Italian distributor, very graciously hosted the event at Casa della Musica in Parma, with over 50 people from industry and academia in attendance. Dr. Farina gave a “lectio magistralis” entitled “Impulse Response measurements by Exponential Sine Sweeps” http://pcfarina.eng.unipr.it/Public/Presentations/AudioPrecision-workshop.pdf.

After Dr. Farina's lecture, Audio Precision presented the University of Parma with an APx585 8-channel audio analyzer, on behalf of Dr. Farina. Additionally, a plaque was presented to Dr. Farina to commemorate the event. Professor Rinaldo Garziera representing the University of Parma accepted the gift from Audio Precision. In his remarks, he said that there were three things to be particularly happy about at this occasion: 1) Happy in the accomplishments of one from their group; 2) Happy in the technology transfer from academia to industry; and 3) Happy to have an enlightened company giving back to the educational world in a timely manner.

Dr. Thomas Kite, Vice President of Engineering at Audio Precision, gave the concluding presentation entitled, “Fast Audio-Band Measurement Using Log-Swept Chirp Signals”.

The event moved from Casa della Musica across the street to Casa del Suono. The attendees were able to experience the Sonic Chandelier -- a futuristic sound system, which focuses sound in a tight listening area. The proper delays and gains to the 192 loudspeakers have been designed into the system so that the sound is focused in a narrow beam.

Later in the evening, a reception and dinner were held in Dr. Farina’s honor at the prestigious restaurant, Parma Rotta. Let’s just say the food and beverages were spectacular!

Many commented that the event was outstanding for its technical content, as well as a unique occasion to meet with their colleagues. Conversations flowed as freely as the wine!
